This is a book in verse, so it really lends itself to an audio edition. When she is invited to join her school’s slam poetry club, she tries to find a way to attend without her Mami finding out. She pours all her feelings and frustrations out onto the pages of a leather notebook, but can’t let her Mami find out and keeps her thoughts to herself. Ximoara Batista wants to say a lot of things, but not only does she feel unheard, she feels like she can’t say the things she wants. And it doesn’t get better than Meryl Streep, and a full cast, reading the ending for you! The good news is that if the audiobook reads it aloud to your children, you won’t have to choke your way through the last couple of chapters, trying not to sob on the page. This is one of my favorite books to read aloud to my children when they get to the chapter book stage.
